Speaker Biography

Alex McDowell RDI is a narrative designer and creative director working in multi-platform experiential media. Throughout his 30-year career of production design, McDowell collaborated with directors including Steven Spielberg (Minority Report, The Terminal), Tim Burton (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and David Fincher (Fight Club), among many others.

Since 2012, Alex has been a professor of practice at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where he teaches world building, systems, design and storytelling. He is director of the World Building Institute and the World Building Media Lab, and co-founder and creative director at world building studio Experimental Design. Alex has served on boards at the Getty Research Institute, the National Academy of Sciences, Autodesk, the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council, and the Pancreatic Beta Cell Consortium. His multiple awards include the lifetime RSA Royal Designer for Industry (RDI). He has an Honorary Doctorate at the Pardee RAND Graduate School as Doctor of Public Policy.
