Moral Values and Ethical Decision-making in Designing Data-Driven Systems

Sarah Bennett is a second year PhD student at the University of Edinburgh sponsored by Microsoft Research. Her research interests lie within the intersection of moral philosophy, artificial intelligence and the design and implications of real world AI systems. She is actively involved with the research community, leading the AI Ethics and Society research group in Edinburgh, and helping organise conferences and seminars on ethics and data justice.

Her varied experience motivates and informs her current research; she comes from a background which combines Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence. The current study is mapping the value systems and decision-making processes of machine learning specialists via semi-structured interviews with 35 experts in the field. It will be an ethnomethodological observation of the work of machine-learning specialists in-situ, aiming to explore whether the findings of the first study are replicated in real-world projects.
