Emerging Innovators

Biography

Lucy Wheeler is a London-based creative technologist and director, and co-founder of Nothr, a creative technology studio working across R&D, immersive experiences and interactive systems. Her practice explores collective experience through responsive systems, examining how embodied interaction and computational technologies shape participation and relationships between people, machines and environments. Since 2017, she has worked across arts, cultural and commercial projects, with a background spanning real-time 3D, XR, interactive installations, interaction design and audience experience.

She is motivated by exploring how technology can create new conditions for experiencing, paying attention and being together, beyond the habitual forms through which digital media mediate experience.

A question that runs through my work is how technology changes the relationship between an individual and a collective. This crystallised through research with a choreographer and Teesside University through XR Network+, where we explored how the body and avatar might become a natural interface for storytelling and movement, testing how physical movement and behaviour could shape digital experiences. This made me interested in technology that responds to the body rather than asking people to learn another set of controls. It has also changed how I approach problems: if a technical limitation gets in the way of the creative idea, I will adapt a technology, change the interaction, combine different systems or question the assumption behind the limitation.
At the moment, I am moving beyond the familiar boundaries of XR, thinking more about pervasive media, responsive environments and our social relationship with technology, and what happens to the individual within a collective experience. Alongside this, I am exploring AI as a creative tool, particularly how it might work upstream in the creative process to give people more agency and space to develop ideas, rather than narrowing or replacing creative thinking. Through Nothr, I want to keep exploring beyond familiar interfaces and finding new relationships between people, technology and environments.

Lucy is a pioneer in creative technology and has recently established her own company, Nothr. She is thoughtful and ethical in her approach, working on health and wellbeing applications in immersive tech. She is also a huge supporter of underrepresented groups, she has been instrumental in establishing Ida South London a local community for women trans and non-binary creatives, creating spaces for marginalised creatives to meet and support one another. She is a true innovator across disciplines and would be an excellent addition to the BEYOND cohort.
