Speaker Biography
Gary Zhexi Zhang is an artist and researcher based in London and Shanghai. His work deals primarily with collective belief, geopolitics and the history of science and technology.
He recently led a report for British Council on arts and technologies in China, and is currently writing a book on the technocultures of a multipolar world in which the West is no longer the centre of technological production. His first book, Catastrophe Time! (Strange Attractor Press, 2023) was a collection of essays, fictions and interviews about finance and time.
As an artist, he works with film, installation, as well as technology, performance and writing. He recently exhibited at the 9th Asian Art Biennial and toured the opera, Dead Cat Bounce, across UK venues. As a researcher, he collaborates in a range of contexts including universities, think tanks and cultural institutions. He is currently a Tutor at the Royal College of Art, having recently taught at Goldsmith’s, Chelsea and Parsons School of Design.
