Can cultural events catalyse engagement with climate change?

Can cultural events catalyse engagement with climate change? This is the question that I aimed to explore on a project with researcher, Dr Adam Corner. We focused on several commissions that were part of Season for Change, a UK-wide cultural programme about climate action featuring installations, immersive productions and workshops. We carried out a literature review, interviews with artists and producers involved in the programme as well as experiencing some of the events first hand.

Our research uncovered positive examples of climate change engagement, such as focusing on efficacy and agency. However, explicit references to climate change varied, as did the impact that each of the commissions wanted to have on their audiences. As well as audiences, we found that it was also an opportunity for those involved in the commissions to learn about and engage with climate change.

Briony Latter is a researcher at the Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformations (CAST) at Cardiff University. She comes from a creative background, having originally trained in Art & Design (Foundation) and Photography & Video. She worked in retouching before moving into communications then climate change research.

Briony’s research mainly focuses on public engagement and communication. She has worked on research projects with a creative focus including public engagement with arts and cultural events about climate change, diversity in nature/outdoor photography, and has a current project on audience travel to live music events. Her current PhD research explores university and academic culture and practices related to climate change.
