Speaker Biography

Caroline Scarles is Professor of Technology in Society and Director of the Centre for Digital Transformation in the Visitor Economy, at the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, University of Surrey.

Her research interests lie in the key areas of: Technology, and the visual and multi-sensory within society; social and cultural sustainability, and how these are combined through technology for social good. Caroline’s recent research focuses on enriching the visitor experience through AR and IR technology in arts and heritage, and the role of immersive experiences in providing stimulating environments for healthy ageing and connecting to nature.

Caroline is lead editor of the journal, Tourist Studies. She is also international advisor for the Geographies of Leisure and Tourism Research Group for the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers, a founding member of the International Network for Visual Studies in Organisations and a non-executive Director for Visit Surrey.
