Speaker Biography

Carl, the bass player of The Farm, is not only a successful musician but also an acclaimed documentary maker and film director.

His debut feature film, Sometime Always Never, written by Frank Cottrell Boyce and starring Bill Nighy, received critical acclaim and premiered at the London BFI Film Festival in 2019. It garnered a four-star review in The Guardian and received accolades from influential magazines and newspapers in the UK and USA.

Carl has collaborated with Frank Cottrell Boyce on other feature films, including Grow Your Own, which featured Oscar winner, Olivia Coleman and Benedict Wong. In addition to feature films and numerous broadcast documentaries, he and Clare Heney took the award-winning Polaroids for the Frank Cottrell Boyce novella, The Unforgotten Coat, that won the Guardian Children’s literature prize and the Deutsche Jugendliteraturpreis, the largest children’s literature prize in Europe. He has also exhibited his artwork internationally.

Carl holds a Senior Fellow position in filmmaking at the Institute for Creative Enterprise at Edge Hill University.
