Speaker Biography

I am design-engineer in the field of weaving technologies and design graduating (Ph.D., 2005) from the University of Manchester (UoM (UMIST)), specialising in the design and manufacture of 3D woven structures for advanced textile composites. Upon graduation, I worked in the composites industry where I amalgamated design aesthetics with technical function and performance, concluding in successful commercial projects, and project management for clients diversifying their flat 2D woven fabrics to 3D woven products. These included thermoplastic saddle trees for an equestrian client, and instigating 3D wovens for wind turbine markets. Pursuing a keen interest in research and development for design-engineering of woven textiles/textile design I have undertook commissioning work in the field of technical textiles and for fashion/interior product lines. I secured a teaching and research Lectureship at the University of Leeds in 2016, when I became the academic lead for the newly opened ERDF-funded 3D Weaving Innovation Centre (3D WIC). Since 2020, new commercial engagements, and research developments at the 3D WIC, combine the technical know-how from the woven composites industry with fashion-orientated aesthetics, and functionality using the latest weaving technologies for both 2D and 3D wovens; leading to three Future Fashion Factory industry-led projects.
