3D Woven Trousers For a Zero Waste Future

Collaborattion with forward-thinking fashion brands and sustainable technologies to evolve and innovate 3D garment design and production

This project is a 3D woven, low-waste collection that re-imagines garment production by combining two manufacturing steps into one, merging the weaving of the fabric with the creation of the garment. Using a single machine and requiring less labour, Weffan helps brands become more agile by making localised production accessible.

Weffan answers the needs of our changing world by designing a process that maintains control over more of the supply chain for transparency and resilience. We holistically design collections that consider the garment’s entire lifecycle- from the choice of thread to its end-of-life.

This trouser collection, designed in collaboration with fashion brand Liquid Editions, highlights the low-waste nature of Weffan’s 3D woven production. In traditional cut & sew construction, adding patterns or extra pockets uses more fabric & creates more off-cut waste, but Weffan’s method creates no additional waste. Additionally, these trousers are woven in a single material (using organic cotton) to enable better recyclability, improving the circularity of this collection.

Weffan, founded by Graysha Audren in 2020, aims to make sustainable design production viable and relevant to a changing world. Currently in partnership with the 3D Weaving Innovation Centre research team at University of Leedsto develop a 3D woven garment design catalogue.

Weffan collaborates with forward-thinking fashion brands and sustainable technologies to evolve and innovate 3D garment design and production. Weffan is funded by Innovate UK, Future Fashion Factory, European Commission, and the Prince’s Trust. Weffan has shown at London Design Week and Toronto Design Festival and won a Maison/0 Greentrail Sustainability honourable mention.
